Summary

The sensational true story of murder, madness, glamour, and greed that shook the Gucci dynasty, now fully updated with a new afterword。

On March 27, 1995, Maurizio Gucci, heir to the fabulous fashion dynasty, was slain by an unknown gunman as he approached his Milan office。 In 1998, his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani Martinelli--nicknamed "The Black Widow" by the press--was sentenced to 29 years in prison, for arranging his murder。

Did Patrizia murder her ex-husband because his spending was wildly out of control? Did she do it because her glamorous ex was preparing to marry his mistress, Paola Franchi? Or is there a possibility she didn't do it at all?

The Gucci story is one of glitz, glamour, intrigue, the rise, near fall and subsequent resurgence of a fashion dynasty。 Beautifully written, impeccably researched, and widely acclaimed, The House of Gucci will captivate readers with its page-turning account of high fashion, high finance, and heart-rending personal tragedy。

Really good and insightful telling of the Gucci family, it’s empire, the greed, the family dynamics, the murder, and the fashion industry and its key players generally。 I enjoyed it。 It was a little long and meandering for me at times, but otherwise a good read。 I wanted to have a deeper background before seeing the movie adaptation。

The raw material here is fascinating and full of drama! But this book is DULL。 I couldn’t finish it。

So interesting from a business perspective。 It is a summary of how a family business destroyed itself from the inside by crazy family dynamics。

If you are a fashion history lover, then definitely this book is a good catch for you。 The author of the book, Sara Gay Forden, narrates the family’s notable success in Italian fashion history, their dedication to quality products and making things special。 Having said that, it also unfolds the tragic story of this family allowing greed to take them over rather than working together as a family to keep themselves grounded in the industry。 If you are keen to true crime stories, this is better tha If you are a fashion history lover, then definitely this book is a good catch for you。 The author of the book, Sara Gay Forden, narrates the family’s notable success in Italian fashion history, their dedication to quality products and making things special。 Having said that, it also unfolds the tragic story of this family allowing greed to take them over rather than working together as a family to keep themselves grounded in the industry。 If you are keen to true crime stories, this is better than fiction。 The murder case of Maurizio Gucci is like an explosion。 It has opened a gateway to the secrets behind the doors of The House of Gucci。 Maurizio Gucci’s character is truly interesting。 Although the book has covered two chapters about him, it has managed to provide the necessary details needed for a reader to learn about his character background。 From being a lonely only child of Rodolfo Gucci and Alessandra Winklehaussen, his first love story and relationship with Patrizia Reggiani, until he has reached the position to take over the Gucci Empire in the 90’s。 It also contains the success and the downside of his leadership。 Overall, I definitely like this book for being informative such as the inclusion of the Gucci Family Tree。 It is easier to get familiarized with the names of each member of the family, and the way how Gucci Family has played the game in the world of business industry。 It is about business expansions, banking investments, family lawsuits and power in the family business。 The narration of the book is very compelling。 It has left no questions for me about each member of the family because it is well written and researched。 Reading this book has engaged me so well。 My curiosity has led me to watch documentary films, and check on websites to validate issues or information I’ve read from the book。 。。。more

It’s hard to give a book a good rating when the people in it are so terrible。 I’m not a good person to read this one, I mean, I shop at thrift stores。 I’m not into name brands。 It’s not like I was buying Gucci before, but I definitely wouldn’t after this book。 Money and fame may not let you get away with murder, but it does let you out of prison to gallivant around town。 Just awful。 I’m hoping Lady Gaga will redeem something about these people in the movie。

Angie

It was interesting but I felt it went a little too in depth on the business and financial side of the story which made the book boring。 The title is a little misleading due to the lack of more personal and family stories。

Fascinating! This was a tough and brilliant family that started with nothing, grew this huge powerhouse business, then let greed and ambition take over。 It's a tragic story but the details will remind you what life can be。 Fascinating! I feel like this could have been more interesting than it was。 I'm looking forward to seeing the dramatization in the movies! I'm not huge into high fashion so a lot of the Gucci business stuff wasn't that intriguing to me and unfortunately took up the bulk of the book。 I felt like the murder and trial were glossed over in a rush at the end。 So overall, the pacing just felt off。 But I can tell it was well researched。 I feel like this could have been more interesting than it was。 I'm looking forward to seeing the dramatization in the movies! Couldn’t get into this/struggled with keeping my attention。 There’s a lot of family backstory, but the minutiae of it all is just so boring。 Paused to take a call and couldn’t bring myself to start it back up again。 I found the accents that are sprinkled throughout the audiobook to be kind of jarring。 Stopped: 4:05:09, 25% (ch。 7)

Rating 3。5。 This book took me a long time to finish。 Very interesting reading about the rise & fall of Gucci, family disagreements about the vision of the company, and the story of Mauricio’s Murder。 But It could have condensed some of the business dealings。 Those seemed to drag it down。 Looking forward to the movie。

Not as sensational as expected。 The information encompassing the Gucci family and the murder of Maurizio is quite fascinating, but sadly this only makes up a small portion of the book。 Forden goes into great technical detail about the Gucci business and while she has clearly done an extensive amount of research on this topic, it covers material such as corporate takeovers and stocks which didn't particularly interest me。 The larger than life personalities of the individuals involved helped to ke Not as sensational as expected。 The information encompassing the Gucci family and the murder of Maurizio is quite fascinating, but sadly this only makes up a small portion of the book。 Forden goes into great technical detail about the Gucci business and while she has clearly done an extensive amount of research on this topic, it covers material such as corporate takeovers and stocks which didn't particularly interest me。 The larger than life personalities of the individuals involved helped to keep me engaged and should make for an enjoyable film adaptation。 。。。more

I have struggled to understand if the author wanted to write the book about the Gucci family or the business。 And I think she tried both and this the reason why book was not as enjoyable as it could have been。To start I loved the story how Guccio Gucci started the company and how he engaged his sons to take over and how they did。 Less enjoyable part and I thinl was too long is about Mauricio's manipulations and all this financial services business。If the book was to tell family's story, I am won I have struggled to understand if the author wanted to write the book about the Gucci family or the business。 And I think she tried both and this the reason why book was not as enjoyable as it could have been。To start I loved the story how Guccio Gucci started the company and how he engaged his sons to take over and how they did。 Less enjoyable part and I thinl was too long is about Mauricio's manipulations and all this financial services business。If the book was to tell family's story, I am wondering why are there long stories about how Tom Ford was successful。 And aftermath of Gucci firm once family was cut out。All said pretty good read, but unclear what author wanted to achieve。 However I want to seea film with Lady Gaga about all this。 。。。more

16 hours of audiobook and this read as sensational as an Annual Report。 Sigh。 Hoping the movie is better。

Horrible。 Waste of time。

Despite what you’d expect with a bullet hole on the cover and the promise of it being “a true story of murder, madness, glamour and greed” readers are instead given a lot of corporate information wrapped in members of the Gucci dynasty throwing things at each other。 It’s a fascinating read, but you will inevitably learn too much about various corporate mergers that lead to Gucci becoming a household name。

This was so good! There is a lot of detail on the company (ins and outs, bringing in talent, IPO, transfers of shares, sales of shares, takeovers, etc。) and background on every single person that enters the story from childhood to adulthood。 I found all of it incredibly interesting and devoured all of it。 If you only want to read about the murder this is not the book for you。 It is so much more than just that。 So worth it! So so worth it!

I didn't like the writing style or poor editing。 That being said, it is an interesting story if you can get past the extremely slow start。 I didn't like the writing style or poor editing。 That being said, it is an interesting story if you can get past the extremely slow start。 。。。more

The problem with this book is that it is way too long… If you took out the third of the information it would be better。 Some chapters were so dragged out that it was boring… Other than that I actually quite enjoyed learning more about Gucci’s history and how it progressed。 I enjoyed the little secrets behind their decisions and to learn a bit the process of making products…

Jillian

Title is a bit misleading, this is more about the history of Gucci and less about the murder of Maurizio Gucci。

Read about 1/3。 Starts out fine but to me gets bogged down in intricate business details。 Way more than I want to know about these crazy people。 But I will check out the movie。

This book really seemed to lack focus。 The subtitle involves murder, madness, glamour, and greed。 Yes, all of those do exist, but this really more is a look at the history of the Gucci company with the subtitle topics being little sidesets。 I really wish Forden would have or will write a book on designer Tom Ford as he really took over the story。 I enjoyed the history of the company and this is the classic story of the heirs enjoy the life the company brings but don't appreciate the business。 This book really seemed to lack focus。 The subtitle involves murder, madness, glamour, and greed。 Yes, all of those do exist, but this really more is a look at the history of the Gucci company with the subtitle topics being little sidesets。 I really wish Forden would have or will write a book on designer Tom Ford as he really took over the story。 I enjoyed the history of the company and this is the classic story of the heirs enjoy the life the company brings but don't appreciate the business。 。。。more
